I’m very happy to say the biennial Soundwave music and art festival, now in it’s 5th year, is finally taking shape! Each season investigates a new idea through sound and this year explores the sonic connections to the human condition. With Humanities as the theme, Soundwave ((5)) has commissioned over 30 performances and works to investigate human experience, and examine the future of our human constructs, cultures and rituals through sound. The summer-long multi-venue series will be spread out among some of San Francisco’s most exciting and unorthodox venues including Battery Townsley in the beautiful Marin Headlands, SF Zen Center, California Academy of Sciences, Legion of Honor, The Lab, and so many others. For a full list of participating artists, curators, and event details, please head on over to the main site.
In the past I’ve had the pleasure of playing solo as well as with my band The Drift. This year my involvement will be two-fold, as both performer and curator – needless to say, I am really excited!
I’ll to be doing a solo performance under the skies of the Aurora Borealis in a mini-planetarium (never thought I’d say that!!!). It will take place Thurs. July 5th for the opening night party Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences presented by Mediate & The Bold Italic. Also performing are Oakland-based space troubadours Lumerians in the mezzanine, Matt Baldwin under the coral reefs amongst the fish, DJ’s Tristes Tropiques spinning throughout the evening, plus a host of other interactive multi-media works on display.
I’m also incredibly honored to have been asked to curate one of three event’s based around the concept of revelation. Revelation Zen will be held at and co-presented by SF Zen Center at the lovely Julia Morgan-designed SF Zen Center featuring performances by the SF duo En, Oakland-based artist Marielle V. Jakobsons, and Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Sean McCann. In keeping with the spirit of revelation, there will be components of Zen practice woven into the nights performances including introductions to meditations and Zen practice. It’s a very special treat to be collaborating in this way the Zen Center community, who have been so generous in offering their energy, time, and incredible space to explore ideas through sound. Really hope you can join us Saturday August 25th!
