New Album – “Arc of Night” !

So grateful and proud to announce “Arc of Night” out June 28th on Three Lobed Recordings! The first lead-off track, “Last Light”, is available now on all digital and streaming platforms. The album is also available for pre-order (black or “lunar surface” grey vinyl, digital) directly from the Three Lobed Bandcamp page.

This music is intended to be a sister to last years “Arc of Day” – an album that brought together elements of Danny’s solo output alongside some amazing collaborators who helped extend the sound into new and exciting sonic places. At the core of it all was drummer/percussionist, Rich Douthit, who has been instrumental in shaping the creative trajectory of this material. To honor this, we’ve decided to name this release “Danny Paul Grody Duo”.

Making records is a joint effort. We have been fortunate to welcome back deep buds Chuck Johnson (pedal steel) and Trevor Montgomery (electric bass) on select tunes and to have maestro Jay Pellicci (Brothers Chinese Records) by our side taking on both engineering and mixing duties. We also want to give a BIG thank you to artist Billy Joe Miller for creating another beautiful album cover, Donal Mosher for penning a vivid album forward, D. Norson for his design & layout skills, Carl Saff for mastering with careful ears, and to Cory Rayborn for once-again offering a loving home for this music to live.

We truly hope this album offers some respite for you. 💜

Announcing new album + lead-off single + video!!!

I am overjoyed to announce the arrival of my new album, Arc of Day, taking flight June 16th on Three Lobed Recordings! You can hear the first single, Light Blooms, on all digi platforms and watch a video by Ian Albert via the Uncut premiere here.

Finding the words to describe how much this album means does not come easy, but here goes…

One of the single greatest aspects to making music is getting to share it… to set something free and watch it take on a life all its own is something I will never take for granted. Even more life affirming is getting to share the creative process with others and witnessing something entirely new emerge. This was my intention from the get-go and Arc of Day is the result of that effort.

I am incredibly grateful to Rich Douthit (percussion), Chuck Johnson (pedal steel), Jonathan Sielaff (clarinet), and Trevor Montgomery (bass) for joining me and truly helping to elevate the music. Mega thanks also goes to collaborators, Billy Joe Miller, for gracing the album cover with his stunning painting, Donal Mosher for writing a beautiful forward, D. Norsen for his impeccable design skills, the Brothers Chinese Recordings (Jay and Ian) for vividly capturing this music in a studio setting (a first for DPG!), Carl Saff for his mastering wizardry, the amazing team (women-owned!) at Gold Rush Vinyl, and to Cory Rayborn for giving this music a home and for steadfast belief in what I do.

You can listen to “Light Blooms” on your preferred streaming service. The full album is available for pre-order on Bandcamp (180 black or orange LP, digital) or from your favorite retailer.

Featured in Terrascopædia issue 20!

Thrilled to receive my physical copy of the latest issue of Terrascopædia 20 in the mail today and I must say it’s exquisite! Very thankful to head proprietor, Phil McMullen, for reaching out to me, and to be included amongst such fine company. Only 150 copies were produced. Each copy is entirely hand made from cover to cover, typeset one letter at a time and printed in full color on a fully restored 1926 vintage press (AKA labor of love – learn more about the process here). Not surprisingly, it tends to sell out quick so I’ve included some snaps from the interview where I discuss past/present/future releases, including some new and exciting music on the horizon 😅💫✨

As always, thanks for listening and supporting!

Three Lobed 21st Festival!

Hard to believe this is on the horizon in less than two weeks! I am beyond excited to celebrate 21 years of Three Lobed Recordings among such fine company! Massive gratitude to Cory Rayborn, who keeps things chugging along with so much heart and genuine support! It’s going to be a heady three days…

With love,

THREE LOBED RECORDINGS 21st ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL!

Very psyched to announce I’ll be heading east this coming April for Three Lobed Recording’s 21st anniversary festival in collaboration with WXDU 88.7 FM, Duke Coffeehouse, Duke Arts, and Duke Performances! This marks my first solo performance in nearly two years, which is wild and yet not surprising given our pandemic reality. I’m honored to be a part of the Three Lobed family of artists and excited to celebrate three nights of exploratory music amongst an incredible lineup!

A note about the fest from Three Lobed honcho and all-around solid dude, Cory Rayborn:

Once upon a time we were going to throw a three day festival with our friends at duke performances and WXDU to celebrate the kickoff of TLR’s 20th anniversary. it would have been in october 2020 and, well, a few things came together to make that unworkable. the world is starting to look a little more open and workable and we’re trying again, this time in the form of the three lobed 21st anniversary festival from april 14-16 2022 in durham NC. look for a memorable three day weekend containing sets from (in no particular order) the gunn-truscinski duo, body/dilloway/head, sunburned hand of the man, pelt, steve gunn (solo), meg baird & mary lattimore, daniel bachman, marisa anderson & william tyler, 500mg, lee ranaldo with films by leah singer, wet tuna, danny paul grody, the orcutt/corsano duo and some more performances that we aren’t in a position to list quite yet. additional information (day by day breakdown) and tickets are available at the link in the bio. join us, won’t you?

Happy 20th Anniversary to Three Lobed Recordings!!!

Earlier this week, the good folks at Aquarium Drunkard put together a feature celebrating 20 yrs of Three Lobed Recordings. To mark the occasion, a variety of people were invited to share thoughts on albums that have made an impact on them. I am humbled to have been included and grateful to be a part of this incredible family of artists!

Below are some thoughtful reflections on my LP “Between Two Words” (2013) by William Tyler and Chuck Johnson, both of whom happen to be personal guitar heroes and all-around solid human beings. Truly touched by these words:

via companion feature on the equally awesome site, Doom & Gloom From The Tomb

I definitely encourage you to visit the full feature linked above, as it takes a deep-dive into an even deeper catalogue of varied adventurous sounds.

Here’s to another 20 yrs to one of the best labels around!

Wishing you all good health and peace,

DPG
